چکیده

Our objectives are a) To describe the detailed structure of the air flow in a mature hurricane, b) To understand the vertical force balance in the eye and the eyewall, c) To investigate the presence of supergradient flow in hurricanes and the underlying processes, d) To study the surface wind structures during landfall, e) To investigate the transformation of a cold-core continental mesovortex into a warm-core tropical storm over the warm ocean, f) To simulate the December 15 1992 cloud cluster during TOGA-COARE, and g) To study whether inhomogeneous distribution of cloud droplets can lead to spatial variablity in supersaturation to acclerate the broadening of marine cloud dropsize spectra.

Evolution of Convection During Tropical Cyclogenesis

Central to tropical cyclogenesis is the changing behavior of moist convection as the cyclone evolves. Based on a cumulus ensemble model run in weak temperature gradient mode, we suggest that the mid-level vortex created by early-stage convection stabilizes the environment in way that favors further development. In particular, modeled convection occurring in the more stable environment produces ...

Relationships between total lightning, deep convection, and tropical cyclone intensity change

This study investigates the characteristics of total lightning in the inner core (INCO, 0–100 km) and outer rainband (OB, 200–400 km) of tropical cyclones (TC). Relationships between flash density (FLD), convective intensity, and TC intensity change are further examined. FLD shows a bimodal structure with a strong maximum in the eyewall (INCO, 0–50 km) and a secondary maximum in the OB. FLD max...

A Minimal Three-Dimensional Tropical Cyclone Model

A minimal 3D numerical model designed for basic studies of tropical cyclone behavior is described. The model is formulated in s coordinates on an f or b plane and has three vertical levels, one characterizing a shallow boundary layer and the other two representing the upper and lower troposphere, respectively. It has three options for treating cumulus convection on the subgrid scale and a simpl...

“optimal” Conditions for Rapid Intensifications of Tropical Cyclones

Rapidly intensifying (RI) tropical cyclones (TC) are the major error sources in TC intensity forecasting. In order to improve the estimates of RI probability, association rules as a data mining technique are used here to facilitate the process of looking for candidate sets of conditions which have strong interactions with rapidly intensifying TCs. Compared to the relation analysis method, the t...

The Influence of Soil Moisture on the Planetary Boundary Layer and on Cumulus Convection Over an Isolated Mountain. Part I: Observations

Data collected around the Santa Catalina Mountains in Arizona as part of the Cumulus Photogrammetric, In Situ and Doppler Observations (CuPIDO) experiment during the 2006 summer monsoon season are used to investigate the effect of soil moisture on the surface energy balance, boundary layer (BL) characteristics, thermally forced orographic circulations, and orographic cumulus convection. An unus...
